Scholarships for International Students: Midwest

If you’re an international student considering studying abroad in the U.S., oftentimes the biggest obstacle is the price tag. U.S. colleges and universities are definitely not known for their affordability. 

However, many people are unaware of the numerous scholarship opportunities available to international applicants that can lift this burden - they’re definitely not easy to find, either. Here, we’ve done ALL the research for you! Find over 50 full ride and free tuition scholarships available to international students in the Midwestern U.S., updated as of May 2021!

  1. Hendrix College (Conway, Arkansas)

    1. Hendrix College Scholarship: Offers $20,000 and up based on GPA, standardized test scores, leadership, extracurricular activities, and recommendations. All accepted students will receive an award based on their applications.

    2. Hays Memorial Scholarship: Offers tuition, a double occupancy residence hall room, unlimited board plan, and mandatory fees. For students entering college in 2021, all test requirements related to the invitation only scholarship weekend are relaxed, and all students are considered. Application for admission serves as an application for the scholarship weekend, which is due by November 15.

  2. Indiana University Bloomington (Bloomington, Indiana)

    1. Wells Scholars Program: Offers tuition, fees, a living-expenses stipend, a summer experience grant, and support for overseas study. Selections are based on academic accomplishment, character and leadership, involvement in extracurriculars, and interest in the community and larger world. Students are nominated by Indiana high schools and selected out of state high schools, as well as by the Office of Admissions. Nominations and required materials are due by November 1.

  3. Miami University (Oxford, Ohio)

    1. Merit Scholarships: Miami University offers guaranteed merit scholarships to qualified high school students. To qualify for half to full tuition scholarships, students must have at least a score of 33 on the ACT or a 1450 on the SAT and a 3.5 GPA. The merit scholarship guarantee’s priority deadline for admission is December 1. 

    2. Presidential Fellows Program: Offers full tuition, fees, room and board, and a one-time $5,000 academic enrichment stipend. Students will be reviewed based on their overall admission application and supplemental essay, which is due on December 1.

  4.  Oberlin College (Oberlin, Ohio)

    1. Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane Scholarship: Offers a four year full-tuition scholarship. This scholarship is only available to citizens from a sub-Saharan African country applying to the Oberlin College of Arts and Sciences. There is no separate application. Criteria for selection includes a strong academic record and the potential to excel within an American liberal arts curriculum.

    2. Edwin O. Reischauer Scholarship: Offers a four year full-tuition scholarship. This scholarship is only available to Japanese nationals who have been accepted for admission to the Oberlin College of Arts and Sciences. There is no separate application. Criteria for selection includes a strong academic record and the potential to excel within an American liberal arts curriculum.

  5. Rhodes College (Memphis, Tennessee)

    1. Bonner Scholarship: Offers $10,000 per year and a stipend of $1,500 per semester, based on fulfilling the weekly service requirement. There are additional living stipends and earnings for completion of other service projects. The Bonner Scholarship is for entering students who have a passion for service and social justice, and who require financial assistance in order to attend Rhodes. Scholarship application needs to be submitted within seven days of a student’s completed application for admission.

  6. Saint Louis University (Saint Louis, Missouri)

    1. Presidential Scholarship: Offers tuition. Students need a 3.85 GPA and SAT score of at least 1360 or ACT score of 30 to be eligible. The scholarship and freshman admission applications must be submitted by December 1.

  7. Southern Methodist University (Dallas, Texas)

    1. President’s Scholars Program: Offers tuition and fees for eight semesters plus one summer education abroad. Under certain conditions, the Campus Community Award may pay for room and board on campus. Students must have exceptional scores on the SAT or ACT, a challenging high school curriculum, and high school rank in the top 10%, and a commitment to engagement in school and/or community activities. All students who apply to SMU by the priority deadline, January 15, will be considered for the scholarship, and will be invited to interview if they are finalists.

  8. Texas Christian University (Fort Worth, Texas)

    1. Texas Christian University: Offers full tuition to fifty students each year. Recipients average at around 33 on the ACT and 1500 on the SAT, average at a 3.97 GPA, and graduate in the top 2% of their graduating class. 

  9. University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa, Alabama)

    1. Presidential Scholarship: Offers tuition to students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Some students may qualify for an additional one year of on-campus housing, $1,000 per year stipend for four years, $2,000 one-time allowance for use in summer research or international study, and a $2,000 book scholarship. Students should submit by January 15 to ensure priority consideration for all types of financial aid.

  10. University of Houston (Houston, Texas)

    1. Tier One Scholarship: Offers tuition, fees, $1,000 to support undergraduate research, $2,000 for study abroad, priority registration, on-campus housing and meal plan for the first two years at UH, and a waiver of non-resident tuition for out-of-state students. Incoming freshmen who have above a  1400 SAT score or 30 ACT score, rank in the top 10% of their high school graduating class, and demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, and community engagement have a greater chance of selection. The 2020 scholarship priority deadline was November 1.

  11. University of Illinois (Champaign, Illinois)

    1. Provost Scholarship: Offers full tuition to incoming freshmen.

    2. Stamps Scholarship: Offers the full cost of attendance and an enrichment fund to incoming freshmen.

  12. University of Kentucky (Lexington, Kentucky)

    1. Presidential Scholarship: Offers full tuition. Applicants must have a 3.5 GPA and 31 ACT or 1390 SAT to be eligible. The 2020 deadline for completed admission applications and supporting documents was December 1. 

    2. Otis A. Singletary: Offers full tuition and a housing stipend. Applicants must have a 33 ACT or 1450 SAT to be eligible. The 2020 deadline for completed admission applications and supporting documents was December 1.

    3. Patterson Scholarship: Offers full tuition and a housing stipend. This scholarship is available to National Merit Finalists or National Hispanic Recognition Scholars. The 2020 deadline for completed admission applications and supporting documents was December 1.

  13. University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Michigan)

    1. Stamps Scholarship: This scholarship awards full tuition and potential enrichment funding of up to $10,000, and is renewable annually for four years of undergraduate study. Stamps Scholars are selected from students admitted through Early Action, and the selection process is based on GPA, SAT/ACT scores, difficulty of coursework, exceptional talent, innovation, leadership, awards, service, and commitment to community.

  14. University of Mississippi (Oxford, Mississippi)

    1. Stamps Scholarship: Offers the full cost of attendance and $12,000 in enrichment funding. This scholarship is offered to the top incoming freshmen who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and have proven leadership and service records.

  15. University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, Indiana)

    1. Stamps Scholarship: Offers full tuition, fees, $3k yearly from an enrichment fund, and a faculty mentor to 10 admitted students each year who exemplify leadership, perseverance, scholarship, service, and innovation. Candidates are selected from the top 5% of the admitted pool.

  16. University of Texas at Dallas (Dallas, Texas)

    1. The Eugene McDermott Scholars Program: Offers full tuition, fees, a living stipend, a $1,000 yearly textbook stipend, a $12,000 study abroad fund, a $3,000 fund for professional development, travel expenses for cohort trips, tickets to cultural events, paid travel home twice yearly for domestic students and once for international students, and other benefits. Students must have a 1490 SAT score, 34 ACT, or status as a National Merit Semifinalist. Additional considerations include a class rank in the top 5%, broad and eclectic interests, and social skills. The 2020 deadline was December 1, and finalists are invited to McDermott Award Finalists’ Weekend.

  17. Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tennessee)

    1. Ingram Scholars Program: Ingram Scholars are provided full tuition each year and a stipend for a summer service project, along with additional financial aid to recipients who demonstrate need.

    2. Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to students who achieve academically and have strong leadership abilities and contributions outside school. Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholars receive full tuition and a stipend for a summer service project, along with additional financial aid to recipients who demonstrate need. 

    3. Chancellor’s Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to students who have worked to solve economic/social/racial issues. Chancellor’s Scholars receive full tuition and a stipend for a summer service project, along with additional financial aid to recipients who demonstrate need. 

  18. Washington University in St. Louis (St. Louis, Missouri)

    1. Danforth Scholars Program: Offers full-tuition scholarships and a $2,500 stipend to students with a passion for helping others and have demonstrated community and service leadership. The class of 2025 deadline for completed admission applications and supporting documents was January 4, 2021.

    2. Annika Rodriguez Scholars Program: Same requirements and deadlines as the Danforth Scholars Program.

    3. John B. Ervin Scholars Program: Same requirements and deadlines as the Danforth Scholars Program.

    4. Stamps Scholarship: Offers annual awards that cover tuition, room and board, fees, books, and additional enrichment funds.

  19. Drake University (Des Moines, Iowa)

    1. National Alumni Scholarships: This program offers two full ride scholarships and three full tuition scholarships. National Alumni Scholars are selected on high school achievement, extracurricular and community activities, and leadership and communication skills. Applicants must have an ACT score of at least 31 or an SAT score of at least 1390, and rank in the top 5% of their class and/or have a GPA of 3.8 or above. The application opens in fall of 2020, and applicants must participate in one of the two National Alumni Scholarship Days.
